New windows are a great way to give your home a fresh, stylish look. But once they’re in, you also have to maintain them. While uPVC windows are very low maintenance compared with other materials, you still need to clean them regularly in order to keep your home looking fresh and enjoy your view of the outside.
Window cleaning is something of a dark art to many homeowners and there are a lot of tips and tricks out there, not to mention specialist ‘miracle’ products designed to make it easier and banish those pesky streaks that always seem to be there, no matter how hard you try. Get the right equipment
In truth, you don’t need fancy chemicals to get your windows looking spotless; all you need is a bucket of warm, soapy water. But you do need some equipment to go with it. To apply the water, you’ll need a window cleaning mop, or squeegee; some window cleaning blades and a couple of microfibre cloths or leather chamois.
Start with the frames
Using a sponge and some warm soapy water, first give your frames a wipe. Doing the frames and window sills at the end could lead to water dripping down the window and onto others. Wipe them down to remove any dirt and then dry them with a dry cloth.
Apply the water with a mop or squeegee
Dip your mop in the bucket and wring the water out with your hand. Using too much water will lead to drips, which create streaks on the window, but not enough will lead to the water being difficult to wipe from the window. The mop should be wet through but not dripping when you hold it over the bucket.
Apply the water to the window in a side to side motion, ensuring the whole pane is covered.
Wipe off the water
Using an ‘S’ motion, starting in the top left-hand corner and working down, wipe the water away from the pane, being sure to keep the rubber blade on top of the water and pushing it downwards as you go.
Dry the glass
Using your microfibre or chamois, dry the window around the edges, making sure no water is going to drip down the pane then give the glass a final wipe with a dry chamois.
Wipe away streaks
Check the window for any streaks or marks left behind by the blade’s contact with the glass. Make sure you do this as quickly as you can to avoid the streak drying onto the glass.
