Holiday Cancelled by Lockdown? Consider Improving Your Home Instead

It’s safe to say that this year has been far from ideal. No sooner had we got over the floods from the unprecedented heavy rainfall, than Coronavirus hit the nation and we were all sent home for the spring.

For many of us, that means many cancelled plans. From birthday parties to weddings, up and down the country, people are having to put their plans on hold. And of course, one of the key things people are missing out on is their holiday.

For most of us, our annual holiday is our one chance to get away from the stresses and strains of modern life, and if there was ever a time we needed to get away, it’s right now. But rather than seeing ourselves as being ‘stuck at home’ perhaps now is the time to take a positive view of our homes and use the time as an opportunity to make some improvements.

Create a positive

Being ‘stuck at home’ can give us a negative view of the house. At worst, it can start to feel like a prison and we can start to forget the joy that our home has given us.

Spending a lot of time at home, particularly when we don’t want to, can lead to us focusing on the things we don’t like about it, which will only make us feel worse about the situation.

Adding a home improvement, such as new windows and doors, will give your home and your spirits a much-needed lift and help you view your property through new eyes again.

Long-term investment

While it may not be quite as glamorous as spending a couple of weeks on the beach somewhere hot, new windows and doors can be enjoyed for a lot longer. All year round in fact, as not only will they look great, but they’ll help to keep your home warmer in the winter months. So long after your holiday would have ended, you’ll still be warm and toasty at home.

Future savings

Double glazing is well known for its effectiveness at insulating your home. That means it can have a significant impact on your heating bills. So while you might not be able to get away this year, in future years, you’ll have saved enough to upgrade your holiday as well as your property.

There are a lot of reasons to feel down at the moment, particularly if you have had to cancel your holiday plans. At Progress Windows, we’ll help you turn a negative into a big positive and use the situation as an opportunity to get the look for your home that you’ve always dreamed of. Door & window handles and letterboxes are germ hot spots.

Door & window handles and letterboxes are germ hot spots. They are frequently touched throughout the day and often forgotten about when it comes to cleaning, despite some viruses being able to survive on the surface for up to 24 hours.

Make sure you are regularly using a disinfectant spray and cloth to wipe over these areas. Always test on a small area first and follow manufacturers guidelines for use.

Secure Your Business Whilst in Lockdown

To all Business Owners;

Over the last few days, we have been contacted by a few of our local businesses due to their premises being broken into.
It seems that targeting closed businesses is a burglar’s new way of taking advantage of what is an already vulnerable time.

So, we have popped together a few ways you can make sure your buildings are secure whilst you are unable to be there due to the Covid-19 lock-down.

Make sure all glass is secure
Ensuring all the glass to the building is secure with no chips/cracks. Replace any broken panes you come across and always make sure they are locked where you are able to do so.

Upgrade to laminated glass
Laminated glass is tougher than standard glass. Having this glass in your windows may discourage any attempted break ins. Trying to smash the glass would make a lot of noise which would draw attention and hopeful deter them.

Check and update locks – keep all entrances secure
Make sure all locks are functioning correctly on all doors and windows.
If you haven’t already got yourself an Ultion Lock to the front door these are the best ones to upgrade too. They have an anti-break in feature.

Install or upgrade alarm systems
If you don’t already have an alarm system now would be the time to consider getting one installed.
If you do, make sure it is working correctly and if it needs an upgrade to ensure it covers all possible unwanted entrances, we advise getting this done too.

Add CCTV as a remote connection linked to your phone/iPad or PC
Having your CCTV remotely connected to your phone or iPad would be a great way to keep an eye on your premises when you can’t be there.

We hope this helps you make sure your businesses are secure at this difficult time.
If there is anything we can help you with or you would like some advice – please email contactus@progresswindows.com.

Can new double glazing save money on heating bill costs?

Double glazing is about more than just a new look for your home. It should also be seen as an investment in your property, one which, in many cases, can pay real dividends over its lifetime. As well as adding value to your property through increased ‘kerb appeal’ it can also, more often than not, help to reduce your heating bills with savings which, over the lifespan of the windows, will save you more than your original investment.

How does double glazing help to reduce heating bills?

Double glazing has always been famous for its ability to better insulate your home, but thanks to new technology, uPVC double glazing has never been more energy efficient.

Better Insulation

The key difference is the insulating properties of your double glazing. By doubling the panes of glass, you’ve already created an extra layer of material for the heat in your home to escape through. The layer of air or in some cases gas between the two panes serves to further trap the heat inside your home.

In addition, the uPVC frames are developed with cavities that allow them to be structurally robust while also holding more heat inside your home.

Better draught-proofing

If your existing windows are a little on the old side, or if they’ve been damaged by the weather or repeat use, you may find that your home is getting draughty. This will certainly be impacting on your heating bills so new windows, expertly fitted will make a positive difference.

Can double glazing save me money?

In the majority of cases, the simple answer is yes, they can. Unless your existing windows are very new and in excellent condition, there will almost certainly be a reduction in your heating bills from the installation of new windows.

The question of how much you can save is a little more tricky as that comes down to a number of factors including how old your windows are, what material your existing window frames are made of, whether you currently have double glazing installed and whether or not there has been any damage to one or more of the frames.

Draught-Proof your Windows and Doors

Feeling a draught coming from your windows or doors can be disheartening. For one thing, you rely on your windows and doors to keep out the elements; if they are letting in a draught, they are failing in their primary function! It also means that you are spending more money to heat your home, which may be noticeably colder already as a result of the draught.

However, there are a number of things you can do to draught-proof your windows and doors with minimal DIY knowledge and without investing in a professional.

Draught-Proofing Windows

Draughts can appear in windows over time. Long-term exposure to the elements can cause the material to warp slightly, meaning the window is no longer sitting flush against the window frame. This can be fixed simply and cheaply by purchasing some draught-excluding strips to fit between the window and frame. There are two main types:

  • Self-adhesive foam strips. These are the more affordable option and are relatively easy to install. Simply peel off the backing tape and stick the strip down in the gap where the window meets the frame. However, it is important to get the right size: if the strip is too thick, the window will not close properly. But if it is too small, it will not be effective at preventing the draught. This type of strip is also less effective when working with a sash style window.
  • Metal or plastic strips with brushes or wipers attached. These are a little more costly but a lot more durable and effective.

Draught-Proofing Doors

There are a number of places where a draught might get through an external door. Addressing these areas could save you on your energy bills and will almost certainly keep your home feeling warmer. The areas to address are:

  • The keyhole. If you have an open keyhole, you can purchase a simple cover that drops a metal disc across the opening, preventing draughts.
  • Letterbox. Use a letterbox with a flap or insulating brush, or both. Just be sure to measure your letterbox opening before you buy
  • Gaps at the bottom can be covered with a brush or hinged flap draught excluder
  • Gaps around the edges can be covered with brush or wiper strips similar to those described for window draughts.

When to seek repairs

If your windows and doors are old, certainly if they are ten years old or more, it will be worth considering full replacements as the benefits from any repairs will be short-lived with a reasonably low impact.

However, if your windows are still reasonably new or the draughts are difficult to cover, or if it is caused by a fault with the installation or mechanism, it may be worth considering seeking assistance from a professional installer. At Progress Windows, we pride ourselves on the quality of our installations and the technical excellence of our teams. If you have an issue with your windows or doors, we would be happy to carry out the repairs or advise on replacement windows and doors.

Top 5 benefits of sliding patio doors

Top 5 benefits of sliding patio doors

There’s a lot of flexibility with in-line sliding door layouts, which means the design works great in homes of all sizes. Other than flexibility, what are the other benefits of sliding patio doors?

  1. Improve your home’s energy efficiency– Our patio doors are designed to insulate, but they also allow more natural light into your home and give you more options for ventilation. You could find yourself making savings on heating, lighting and air conditioning.
  2. They look great– Patio doors have clean, uncluttered styling that looks at home almost anywhere. Your furnishings and décor have the perfect neutral backdrop of a door that doesn’t need to shout to be effective and that doesn’t detract from the view.
  3. Connect you to the outside– Because the glass extends to floor level, you’ll get much better views of the world outside. Even on the chilliest of days, you’ll be able to enjoy your garden. When it’s warm, open up in seconds for a home that flows indoors and out.
  4. Making access easy– Our patio sliding doors glide along their tracks so easily that opening them will never feel like a chore. It’s almost effortless, but there’s another advantage to a wide opening door. If you’ve ever struggled to shift a bulky piece of furniture through a normal doorway, you’ll know what we mean – that extra width can be a godsend.
  5. They’re streamlined– You can hang curtains and have furnishings right next to a sliding door and you won’t need to move them when you want to open up. Bi-folding or French doors need more space between their panes to swing in or out.

Can Double Glazing Shatter?

Famed for its robust design, both in terms of the frames and the glass used, double glazing is the favoured choice for many for its durability and security credentials. Gone, it seems, are the days of young boys working off the debt to replace a window pane shattered by a wayward football.

However, as strong as they are, double glazed windows are not completely unbreakable and, although rare, there are a number of factors that may cause a double-glazed window to shatter.

broken double glazed glass

Manufacturing error

The most common cause of weakness in double glazing is manufacturing error, which is why you should only ever buy from a reputable supplier offering a warranty on their products.

Scratching

Scratches in the glass, caused during the manufacturing process, can create weak spots in the glass, leading them to be more likely to shatter under impact. Again, a reputable manufacturer with appropriate manufacturing procedures will ensure the glass is only cut at the edges.

Temperature and humidity

There are environmental factors that can put a strain on your windows, particularly in the winter. When the temperature inside and outside the home contrasts too greatly, the window will be under increased pressure. The glass in your window will usually be strong enough to withstand this but extreme conditions or inherent weakness could cause the glass to crack spontaneously.

South facing windows are at particular risk of this phenomenon as they receive most sunlight, particularly during the winter. Warming during the day and then cooling at night can cause the glass to crack. You can mitigate this by ensuring south facing windows have curtains to reflect the heat back onto the glass and keep the temperature of the window regulated.

What to do with a broken window

In most cases, a broken window should be covered by your warranty, particularly where a fault in the manufacturing or installation process have led to the breakage.

If your windows are out of warranty, it is important to replace the window as soon as possible. A cracked window will cause a draught in your home, making it harder to keep warm and negatively impacting your heating bills. There are also security concerns as a cracked window is easier to break fully, and this may even invalidate your insurance.

At Progress Windows, we supply and install locally manufactured uPVC windows from reputable manufacturers, such as TruFrame in Leicester, and our window profiles from Liniar. Whether you’re looking for a new window installation, or replacement windows, or even just a repair, book an appointment with us to see how we can help.

How to Fit Blinds in a Conservatory

A conservatory is a fantastic addition to any home. It gives you additional space in which to relax or entertain, or to sit and enjoy your garden. The trouble is, during the summer, with the sun beating down on the glass all day, it can very quickly become uncomfortably hot, rendering your conservatory almost useless on the warmest and sunniest days.

One simple way to overcome this issue is to install blinds into your conservatory.

With a bit of preparation and planning, this is actually a reasonably simple task for you to complete yourself. But we have put together a short guide to installing blinds in your conservatory.

Mark where you want to attach the bracket

This is by far the most important stage of the process and the one which can lead to most damage if performed incorrectly.

You’ll need to drill into the window frame itself, but avoid the glass, which will extend into the window frame. With most windows, the glass will only extend just beyond the black beading so be sure to mark your drill point towards the outer edge of the frame in order to miss the glass.

Use a long ruler or laser level to make sure the markings are level at either side of the window. The central point between each bracket should also align with the centre of the window.

Drill into the frame

Drill into the frame where you made the markings. When drilling, be sure not to apply too much pressure as this could cause the frame to crack. Simply allow the drill bit to do the work for you.

Attach brackets to the frame

Line up the brackets with the hole you’ve just drilled and fix them to the frame using screws. Double check that the brackets are level – providing you did this right at the first step, this shouldn’t cause you any trouble. Once you’re happy the brackets are level, you can then fully tighten the screws.

Attach blinds to the brackets

Most blinds come with clips to complete this stage of the installation. Refer to the instructions that came with your blinds to finish your installation.

Your conservatory will now have a nice new finish to it, and best of all, you’ll be able to keep it much cooler during the hot summer days.

How To Clean Fascias And Soffits?

We spend so much of our time cleaning the inside of our homes that we tend to forget about the outside. The front of your house is the first thing people see, so a dirty and grimy front doesn’t make the best impression.

Soffits and fascias are often overlooked, even though they play an important role in protecting your home’s roofline and maintaining its neat appearance.

Cleaning your soffits and fascias not only keeps your house looking fresh from the outside, it also helps you see early warning signs of damage and remove the build up of mould growth.

In this article we take a closer look at:

  • What are fascias and soffits?
  • How to clean soffits and fascias?
  • How to remove mold from soffits and fascias?

What are fascias and soffits boards?

Fascia

The fascia board is a long board that holds the guttering and runs along the underneath edge of the roof.

Soffits

The soffit board is the main element people see from street level.

The soffit board is attached to the bottom of the fascia board and is often ventilated to allow air to flow through the roof area.

Poor ventilation can cause timber decay as condensation forms in the roof void.

Cleaning soffits and fascias

With a pressure washer

Your soffits and fascias can be a stubborn place to clean but a pressure washer can make the job of cleaning them much easier.

So how can you use a pressure washer to make your soffits and fascias looking brand new?

Step 1

Before you get started soaping up your soffits and fascias, first soak them with clean water, rinsing away all debris and dirt.

Use a low pressure nozzle to begin with to avoid spraying dirt and debris into your soffit vents.

Step 2

For a thorough clean, you will need to use detergent after your initial rinse.

When applying the detergent, fill your tank with detergent.

Dilute the detergent according to the instruction on the bottle if you’re using concentrated detergent.

Turn your tank on and ensure that your pressure washer has the spray tip on.

Start spraying your soffits and fascias.

Step 3

Let the detergent do its thing while you change your nozzle to high pressure.

Make sure you turn your tank off and spray towards a safe place to get rid of any excess detergent still in the nozzle.

Starting at the point where you applied the detergent, spray in the same direction.

For an even finish, spray steadily along your soffits and fascias, removing all dirt and detergent from them.

When you have finished, switch the nozzle back to low pressure and rinse your soffits and fascias for a final clean.

Without a pressure washer

What if you don’t have a pressure washer?

Not to worry, your garden hose can do just the job.

Step 1

Start by mixing ½ a cup of washing up liquid or detergent to 2 gallons of warm water in a bucket.

To help kill mildew, add two tablespoons of bleach and mix.

Step 2

Prop up a ladder in a position where you can ideally reach both your soffit and fascia so you can clean them at the same time.

Make sure that your ladder is in a stable position before climbing it.

Get a large sponge and soak it in the bucket. Then scrub your soffit and fascia (in the direction of your house).

Focus on areas that usually hold more dirt in their groves.

Work on the areas that you are able to reach from your ladder.

Step 3

Next, you will want to attach a squeeze trigger nozzle on to the end of your garden hose and turn the pressure on high.

Rinse the areas of your fascia and soffit that you scrubbed until all the detergent and bleach has been rinsed away.

Step 4

Move your ladder to the next position and repeat the scrubbing and rinsing process until all of your soffit and fascia has been cleaned.

How to remove mould from soffits and fascias?

Removing mould from your soffit and fascia requires a little more effort.

If mould is left, not only does it not look good, but it can cause your fascia or soffit to rot. What’s more, it can even contribute to your roof’s timber rotting.

Here is how to remove mould from soffits and fascias:

Step 1

Start by mixing three parts bleach to one part warm water per gallon in a bucket.

One bucket is enough to cover 30 to 50 square feet.

Step 2

Position a ladder in a stable position where you are able to reach both the soffit and fascia.

Use a stiff brush and dip it into the bleach solution. Firmly scrub areas affected by mould.

Step 3

Move your ladder to the next position and repeat the scrubbing process until all areas affected by mould have been disinfected.

Step 4

Allow the soffit and fascia to dry.

Step 5

Within a week, inspect the disinfected area to check for mould. If it has not been removed successfully, repeat the disinfecting process until all the mould has been removed.

uPVC soffits and fascias

Timber soffits and fascias can be difficult to maintain and are vulnerable to rot.

Resealing Windows – Your Ultimate Guide

A draughty window or condensation on the internal pane are just some of the signs that your windows need resealing.

Broken window seals can have a massive impact on your windows’ ability to keep the cold outside and to keep the warmth in.

So, if your windows need resealing, how exactly should you go about this? And, how often should you reseal your windows?

Our team are here to answer all your questions regarding resealing windows!

How often should you reseal your windows?

You only need to reseal your windows when problems start to arise. As mentioned above, tell-tale signs that your window seals have broken is if they are draughty or if condensation on the internal pane of your window has formed.

We suggest that you do periodical checks of your windows to see if they are performing effectively and spot any faults early.

Being extra cautious, you may opt to reseal your windows every 5 years, to keep them functioning properly and keep them as good as new, preventing any issues further down the line.

How to reseal your windows

Usually, we recommend leaving the window seal replacement to the professionals, to ensure it is done properly, but if you’re a DIY whizz you may choose to reseal your windows yourself.

Here’s a quick guide on how:

  • Step 1 – Remove window trims

The first thing that you will want to do is, using a hammer and a pry bar, remove the windows trim (internal and external if necessary).

  • Step 2 – Apply the sealant

You can now fill the void with window sealant, avoiding touching the sealant whilst it is wet. There are numerous different sealants available including silicone, latex and butyl rubber.

  • Step 3 – Remove any excess

After the sealant has fully dried, you can now use a knife to cut off any excess.

  • Step 4 – Replace the trim

Finally, you can now replace the trim, touching up any paint imperfections if necessary.

Benefits of resealing your windows

Below is a list of some of the benefits of ensuring that you check your windows for faulty seals and resealing your windows:

  • Energy efficiency

Resealing your windows will greatly increase their energy efficiency, helping to keep your home at more comfortable temperature.

  • Prevents draughts

If you feel draughts coming from your windows, then this is an indicator that your window seals need resealing. By doing this, you can form an airtight seal that prevents those pesky draughts.

  • Tackles condensation

Condensation can form on your windows where the air can pass through the gaps around your window. By resealing your windows, you can stop condensation in their tracks. Leaving condensation untreated can result in a colder house and can even lead to mould and damp forming.

  • Lower energy bills

We all like to save money where we can. Thanks to the improved energy efficiency,  resealing your windows can help your home stay warm and, as a result, save you money on your energy bills.

Can you reseal double glazed windows?

In short, yes, you can reseal a double glazed window. However, we would highly recommend that you hire a window specialist to carry out the replacement to ensure that your window functions correctly, as this is a tougher process.

Find a trusted window specialist

If your window is old or the seals are too damaged to reseal then the best option is to replace the window.

Before you do, it is important to choose a trusted window installer to carry out the installation.

At Progress Windows, our business is founded on providing our customers with the highest quality products and services that you can rely on.
